From Rags to Riches

Liza Smythe is a successful British singer.
Liza Smythe
Her smiling face appears on the covers of international magazines, and every year she travels to many different parts of the world to perform concerts for millions of fans.

However, life used to be very different for this bright young star from Liverpool.
“Eight years ago, ”says Liza, “I lived in a small terraced house with my parents and three brothers.
It was very cramped!
We didn’t have a lot of money, so I used to work as a cleaner at the local hospital to make ends meet.
I used to buy my clothes from second-hand shops.
I was quite plump back then, because I liked eating chips and chocolate.
In my free time I used to sing in the college choir or go for walks on the beach.
I didn’t use to go to clubs because they were very expensive.
I used to listen to the radio a lot, though.
I learnt all the words to every pop song and people hired me to sing at parties.
My friends liked my voice a lot, so they persuaded me to send a cassette to a record company.
That’s how it all started for me. Three weeks later, I received a phone call from the company and my life changed completely.”

Today, Liza lives in a large house with a big garden just outside London with her husband and young daughter.
She is much slimmer now, and looks very elegant in her chic designer clothes.
She is constantly on a diet and goes to the gym every day to keep her body in shape. In her free time she enjoys going to the theatre or to parties.

Liza’s lifestyle has changed a lot since those days in Liverpool.
“I think I’m very lucky to lead the life I do today.
It’s not easy, though, because I don’t have the privacy that I used to have.
Still, I have a lovely family and a very promising career
What else could I ask for?” she says.

The Internet is a network (several networks, in fact) of millions of computers around the world, connected by phone lines, satellite or cable, so that all the computers on the net can exchange information with each other.

Not quite. The Internet links computers, and the World Wide Web is a system which links the information stored inside these computers.

A company or organization stores information in electronic documents on one of the Internet computers, somewhere in the world.
This computer space – the company’s web site – has an address, in the same way that every telephone has a number.
To visit a web site, you simply enter the address.
Your computer is connected to the web site, a document is downloaded, and a page appears on your computer screen.

When you visit a web site looking for information, some words on the page may be underlined, showing that there is more information about the subject in another document.

If you click on one of these words, the Web automatically connects your computer to a new document or web site, even if this is stored thousands of kilometers away.
You are surfing the net!

The man use of the Internet is to find information – for your schoolwork or job, or just to find out more about your hobbies, sports or current events.
You can also use the Internet to read newspapers and magazines, play games, plan your holiday or buy things from your favourite shop.
E-mail makes it possible to send electronic messages anywhere in the world in seconds, and you can use the Internet to ‘chat’ with people and make new friends.

If you don’t already use the Internet, all you need to get started is a computer, a modem and a phone line.
Using the Internet is getting cheaper and easier all the time.

The London Eye
The London Eye, also known as the Millennium Wheel, is the tallest (135 metres (443 ft)) Ferris wheel in Europe, and has become the most popular paid tourist attraction in the UK, visited by over 3 million people a year.

At the time it was erected it was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world, until surpassed by the The Star of Nanchang (160m) in May 2006, and then the Singapore Flyer (165m) which opened on February 11, 2008.

However it is still described as "The world's tallest cantilevered observation wheel" (because the entire structure is supported by an A-frame on one side only) by its operators.
The London Eye is located at the western end of Jubilee Gardens, on the South Bank of the River Thames in London, England, between Westminster Bridge and Hungerford Bridge. The site is adjacent to that of the former Dome of Discovery, which was built for the Festival of Britain in 1951.
It was opened by the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, at 20:00 GMT on December 31, 1999, although it was not opened to the public until March 2000 because of technical problems. Since its opening, the Eye, operated by Merlin Entertainments but sponsored by British Airways, has become a major landmark and tourist attraction.
By July 2002, roughly 8.5 million people had ridden the Eye. It had planning permission only for five years, but at that time Lambeth Council agreed to plans to make the attraction permanent.
Since 1 January 2005, the Eye has been the focal point of London's New Year celebrations, with 10-minute fireworks displays taking place involving fireworks fired from the wheel itself. Tussauds Group in 2007, it owns 100% of the Eye, with British Airways continuing its brand association, and also having provided the original construction loans. The Tussauds Group, British Airways and the Marks Barfield family (the lead architects) had previously owned a third of the Eye each. However from the beginning of 2008 the name 'British Airways' was dropped from the logo.
During the bidding process of the 2012 Olympic Games, the London bid organisers announced the Olympic emblem would be attached to the Eye for the duration of the 2012 Summer Olympics.

In August of 2007, it was announced that London Eye could be temporarily renamed "The McCartney Eye" after Sir Paul McCartney of the Beatles. The renaming would coincide with the release of a McCartney related DVD set titled "The McCartney Years".

The Pros and Cons of using the Internet

Advertisements for the Internet promise you a world of information, entertainment, on-line shopping and e-mail services.

However the real world of the Internet may not be as perfect as the advertisements suggest.

Using the Internet offers many advantages.

For example, all of the latest information is available to you, in your home, at any hour of the day or night.
It is much faster and easier to surf the net in search of information from all over the world than to travel to libraries in dozens of countries.

Firstly, on-line shopping makes it possible to search through catalogues to find exactly what you want at the best price, saving both time and money.

By joining a newsgroup or chat group, you can share your hobbies and special interests, and perhaps make friends all over the world.

Finally e-mail is popular because it is faster than sending a letter and cheaper than a telephone conversation.

On the other hand, the Internet has several disadvantages.
Also, with so much information available, finding what you want can take you hours.

Multimedia web pages with photographs, music and video are attractive, but they make downloading show and boring.

What is more, there is too much advertising instead of real information.

As for Internet friendships, sitting at home in front of a computer making ‘chat friends’ is not the same actually meeting people.

In conclusion, the Internet obviously has both good and bad points.

Fortunately, the system is improving all the time, and any problems which still exist can be solved.
Whether we like it or not, the Internet is here to stay, so we have to make the best possible use of it.

UNIT 3 Page number 22, Exercise 30.
This my text
It’s Alice and Liza’s conversations.
They are very nice womens.

A. Mn, that was wonderful coffee. Oh, it’s so nice to be here in Brussels with you, Liza –and I can’t wait to go shopping.
L. Ah, you have come to the right place, then! Boutiques, confectioner’s, lace shops, antique shops, enormous department stores-you can shop till you drop, my dear.
A. ThaT’S great! Where shall we go first?
L. Well, the Sablon District is full of antique shops. You must visit Dewindt, on Lebeau-straat. It’s got some lovely antiques.
A. Oh, Liza! Aren’t you coming with me?
L. I can’t, I’m afraid, but I’ll meet you at three, outside Inno Brussels on rue Neuve. It’s Brussels most famous department store, and you can buy everything from clothes to jewellery there.
A. Ooh. That sounds exciting! And what about souvenirs? Brussels is famous for chocolate and lace, isn’t it?
L. Yes, it is, and Leonidas on Boterstraat has the most delicious pralines in the world. We can also go to F.Rubbrecht in the Grand-Place. We’ll find the best lace there.
A. Will we have enough time? The shops are open from nine to six, aren’t they?
L. That’s right, but it’s Friday today. Shops are open until 8:00 pm on Fridays. And there are sales every January and Juky, so …
A. The sales are on now? That’s great! I can find some bargains!
L. Of course you can. Didn’t I tell you? Brussels really is the best place for shoppers!

Naadam & the Three Manly Sports
The sports most popular with the Mongols since ancient times are wrestling, horse racing and archery. Together they form Eriin Gurvan Naadam - the three manly sports. The three manly sports make up the core program of the National Day festivity which has been held annually for the past two centuries. Earlier, Naadam was often associated with religious ceremonies (worshipping the spirit of the mountains, the rocks and the rivers). At present it is a national holiday held 11-13th July each year to commemorate the Mongol People's Revolution. This tradition was set by D.Sukhbaatar, the founder of the people's state in 1922, when competitions in national types of sport were held to commemorate the first anniversary of the People's Revolution.

On July 11 local competitions are also held in some Aimags and Sums to choose the best sportsmen of that area. Small contests involve over a hundred athletes and some larger ones have over a thousand. The Naadam Festival is now a major tourist attraction. The first day starts with a colourful marching display of soldiers outside Government House in Sukhbaatar Square, playing brass instruments and being accompanied by Mongolians dressed in warrior outfits. The opening ceremony takes place at the Naadam Stadium with more marching by the military, athletes and monks. A similar closing ceremony takes place on the second day in the evening. The horse racing is held a small distance away from the stadium at a place called Yarmag. There is always plenty to see and it's even possible to pitch a tent along with all the competitors.

The traditional style of wrestling has its own long-standing ritual. Each wrestler wears ornamental knee boots with upturned toes, tight trunks and an open-fronted, long sleeved vest of silk. With arms imitating the flight of a bird, he performs the eagle dance, which symbolises power and invincibility. Supposedly, the vest was changed in design to an open-fronted vest after a woman was found to have taken part in the event and won!
